Sweet Bun

Sweet bun is one of the bakery item which fascinates right from my childhood. I was always curious about its baking process. After a very long time - here I am with the recipe of my all time favorite sweet bun. I experimented with a lot of recipes and finally settled in this one. This recipe is one of the healthier version of the original sweet bun made with all purpose flour. However, for somebody who loves the real taste of authentic sweet bun must bake it with all purpose flour instead of whole wheat flour.
Cook Time:
25-30 Minutes

Yield:
8-9 Buns

Ease of Cooking:
Easy

What all you'll need?

  • Whole Wheat Flour - 1 cup
  • All purpose flour - 1 cup ( I used double fiber all purpose flour)
  • Active Dry Yeast - 1 packet(2 1/4 teaspoon)
  • Warm Water - 1/4 cup
  • Warm Milk - 3/4 - 1 cup
  • Egg - 1 ( I used organic brown egg)
  • Clarified Butter/ Ghee - 2 tablespoons
  • Sugar - 1/4 cup
  • Honey - 3 tablespoons
  • Salt - 1/4 teaspoon

Let's cook it!!

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degree F. In the meantime. grease a square baking pan with oil or butter.
  2. Mix yeast and 2-3 teaspoons of sugar in 1/4 cup of warm water and allow it to sit for about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add half cup of flour and remaining portion of sugar to the yeast water mixture(Step 1). Mix it thoroughly to form a semi-thick batter. Let it rest until it's foamy.
  4. Add clarified butter, honey, egg, salt and rest of the flour to the foamy batter (Step 2). Knead it well to form a soft dough by adding milk as required.
  5.  Place the dough on a a greased bowl (Spread some butter evenly on the bowl) and let the dough rest at room temperature until it doubles in size. It might take up to 2 hours.
  6. Once the dough is doubled, punch it down and transfer it to a board. In order to avoid the dough being sticky to the board, sprinkle some flour on the board before transferring the dough.
  7. Divide the dough into 8-9 equal portions and roll it into different round shaped buns.
  8. Place the buns on the greased baking pans and let it rise until double in size. It may take up to half an hour to rise.
  9. Once its double in size, place them in the preheated oven at 375 degree for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, reduce the temperature to 350 degree F and bake them for another 10 minutes.
  10. If the bun is golden brown in color, it's ready to be served.
